SARS Tax Brackets 2026/27 Explained (With Examples)

Understand the new 2026/27 SARS income tax brackets, rebates and thresholds, and work out what you'll actually take home.

SARS Tax Brackets 2026/27 Explained

The 2026/27 tax year (1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027) brought the first inflation adjustment to the brackets since 2023/24. Here's what it means for your pocket.

The tax-free threshold went up

If you're under 65, you now pay no income tax on the first R99 000 you earn in the year (up from R95 750). For ages 65–74 it's R153 250, and for 75+ it's R171 300.

The primary rebate

Everyone gets a primary rebate of R17 820 for 2026/27 (up from R17 235). This is a flat amount subtracted from your calculated tax. People 65+ get an extra secondary rebate (R9 765), and 75+ get a further tertiary rebate (R3 249).

How the brackets work

South Africa uses a marginal system: you only pay the higher rate on the portion of income inside that bracket, not your whole salary. The rates run from 18% on the first R237 100 up to 45% above R1 817 000.

Work out your own number

Rather than do this by hand, our SARS Income Tax Calculator has the official 2025/26 and 2026/27 tables built in. Enter your salary and age and it shows your tax, monthly PAYE and take-home pay instantly.
