How to Write a CV in South Africa (2026 Guide)

A clear, recruiter-backed guide to writing a CV that passes ATS scanners and lands interviews in the SA job market.

How to Write a CV in South Africa (2026)

Most CVs are rejected before a human ever reads them. South African recruiters and big employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that scan your CV for keywords and structure. Get the basics right and you jump ahead of most applicants.

1. Keep the layout simple

Fancy two-column designs and graphics often break ATS parsers. Use a clean, single-column layout with clear headings: Contact, Profile, Experience, Education, Skills.

2. Match keywords to the job ad

Read the advert and mirror its language. If it says "stock control", write "stock control", not "inventory management".

3. Lead with impact

Start bullet points with action verbs and add numbers: "Increased monthly sales by 18%" beats "responsible for sales".

4. The SA-specific bits

Include your city and province, your notice period, and whether you have a driver's licence and own transport. Local recruiters look for these. You do not need to include your full ID number or a photo on most applications.

5. Proofread, then proofread again

One typo can cost you the interview. Read it aloud, or ask someone else to check.
